Amiga Box Art: ‘Shadow Fighter’ Illustrated by Greg Staples!
- Added 21/01/2024
Shadow Fighter was a relatively late entry into the Amiga’s games lineup. Developed by NAPS Team and Published by Gremlin in 1994 it quickly gained a reputation as one of the best one-on-one fighting games on the Amiga.
The game’s boss character ‘Shadow’ forms the centre of the story, once a noble samurai warrior, he was cursed to become the walking dead ‘shadow fighter’, who can only be released from his curse when defeated by a superior opponent.
Whilst the in-game character art was created by NAPS Team, the cover art was created by iconic English comic book artist Greg Staples, who trained in Sheffield and worked as both a draftsman and in comics & memorabilia before becoming a fully fledged artist. He is probably best known for his work on 2000AD comics and Judge Dredd but has also illustrated Batman, Spider-Man and numerous other characters for comics, games and art cards.
Shadow is rendered on the cover in Greg’s distinctive highly detailed muscular but grungy style, which suits the character well as an ancient undead warrior!
As a first entry from a relatively unknown studio at the time, they could have gone with a much more generic or lacklustre cover. But I think this was an inspired choice and has really stood the test of time. 30 years on and it still looks awesome.
